What happened:
Herbert Strickland, 53, is shot four times at the Big K gas station at 909 Dodson Ave. Police say he attempted to shield a woman from gunfire when a man entered the store and opened fire. Meco Siler, the year's first homicide victim, was his daughter. Antonio Dejong Espey, 18, is charged with first-degree murder in Strickland's death, but the charges are later dismissed after a key witness is shot and killed.
